How Technology Is Shaping Small Business Growth: Heath Carter on Simple Numbers

Is your technology helping your business grow, or quietly holding it back?

That was the question on the table when TekConcierge Founder and CEO Heath Carter joined Mike Maxson and Brandon Gray of CRI on Profitability Playbook: The Simple Numbers Podcast. In Season 3, Episode 36, they dug into where technology, AI, and small business growth meet.

Heath has spent more than 25 years at the intersection of business and IT. He started TekConcierge in Dallas in 2009 with a team of two. Today the company serves more than 150 clients across multiple states and has landed on the Inc. 5000 four years running. He has seen what technology does for a growing company, and what it costs when it goes wrong.

Here are the highlights.

Lessons From Founding TekConcierge

Before TekConcierge, Heath spent six years as VP of Technical Sales and CTO at a local MSP. In 2009 he set out on his own. In the episode, he shares what building the company from the ground up taught him.

Growth came from discipline, not shortcuts. The company runs on the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) so service stays predictable as the team grows. That structure is what let a two-person shop scale to a team of 40+ without losing the client experience.

The Tech Mistakes That Slow Growth

Most small businesses don’t stall because of one big failure. They stall because of small decisions that pile up. The usual suspects:

  • Buying tools without a plan. New software gets added to solve today’s problem. Nobody checks whether it fits the rest of the stack.
  • Treating IT as a cost center. Technology gets attention only when something breaks. By then, the fix costs more.
  • Ignoring security until an incident. Cybersecurity is a business risk, not just an IT task. Heath has made that point for years.
  • Outgrowing the setup. What worked for 10 people rarely works for 50. Systems need to scale ahead of headcount.

Practical Advice on Scaling

Scaling is an operations problem before it is a technology problem. Technology makes it repeatable.

The businesses that scale well do a few things consistently. They document how work gets done. They standardize the tools their teams use. They plan IT a year ahead, not a week ahead. And they bring in a partner who knows the road before they hit the bumps.

That is the model TekConcierge supports. Clients get a team that handles day-to-day IT, security, and strategy, so owners can focus on running the business.

AI: Real Benefits, Real Drawbacks

Every business owner is being told to adopt AI. Fewer are being told how to do it safely. Heath took both sides of the question.

The upside. AI can take repetitive work off your team’s plate. It speeds up research, drafting, reporting, and customer response. For a small team, that time adds up fast.

The risks. AI tools touch your data. Without guardrails, sensitive client or financial information can end up where it shouldn’t. Output still needs a human check. And a tool rolled out without training or policy creates more problems than it solves.

The takeaway: AI works best when it sits on a secure, well-managed foundation, with clear rules for how your team uses it.

From Managed IT to Managed Intelligence

This is why TekConcierge is moving beyond traditional managed IT. As a Managed Intelligence Provider, we help businesses put AI and automation to work on top of a secure, well-run IT foundation. Growth stays the goal. Technology is how you get there.
